Canvas Painting

A prepared canvas, then the picture

Canvas painting is about the support. You learn a stretched canvas or a canvas board, a ground so the paint does not sink in, and a picture composed for that rectangle. The paint in this studio is acrylic. Poster colour stays on paper in the acrylic and poster course. Oil is not the medium taught here.

  • How a stretcher, a canvas board and a loose canvas differ
  • A ground, and why you paint on that ground rather than on raw cloth
  • A sketch scaled to the canvas, with the edges of the picture decided first
  • Opaque passages and a thinner layer, planned around acrylic’s dry time
  • One finished canvas study, signed on the back with the materials used
