Energy Management & Net Zero

School of Energy · How a site actually runs its energy

Manage the energy you already use, then plan what replaces it

This pathway is for facilities, sustainability and early-career engineers who need to cut waste, defend a saving, and brief a carbon plan. It follows the subjects on the Energy Institute Academy — energy management, net zero, whole energy systems, and networks and storage — rewritten for RIA classrooms in Chennai.

Solar, wind and hydrogen already have their own pages. Cell-level batteries stay on Battery Management System. People who already lead a function continue on Energy Shift Leadership. Completion here is a RIA School of Energy record. Learners who want an Energy Institute certificate, Chartered Energy Manager status, or a UK ESOS assessor route enrol with the Energy Institute.

Six study blocks

Start with the site you can walk. Move on to plant systems, then carbon, the wider system, and the grid.

Start

Essentials

Meters, bills, a baseline and a short audit a manager can use.

Plant

Professional

Heat, HVAC, lighting, motors and a saving you can check.

Lead

Advanced

Money, risk and a carbon plan the board can follow.

Carbon

Net zero practice

Inventory, targets and a delivery plan, including where offsets fall short.

System

Whole energy system

Heat, transport, power and green gases, and what a model can decide.

Grid

Networks & storage

Connection, peaks and storage as a plant asset. Cells stay on the BMS page.

What each block covers

1Essentials
Run the energy you can see

For someone new to the role. You map a campus or plant, read the meters, and leave with a note that says where energy goes and what to do first.

  • Walk the site and name the loads
  • Bills, tariffs and what you are buying
  • Baseline and simple targeting
  • Habits that cut waste without new kit
  • A short audit a manager can act on
  • Standards a Chennai site actually meets
2Professional
Find the losses in the plant

For people who already know the bills. You work through the systems that dominate a factory or a large building, then take one real problem through to a recommendation.

  • Heat, boilers and combustion losses
  • HVAC, refrigeration and comfort
  • Lighting, motors and drives
  • Steam and compressed air
  • Metering and checking a saving
  • Controls and on-site power
3Advanced
Hold the programme together

For the person who has to choose projects, buy energy, and explain the result. The work is a feasibility note, not a certificate from another body.

  • The energy manager’s brief
  • Money, procurement and risk
  • A carbon plan leadership can follow
  • How to brief the board and the floor
NZNet zero
A plan the organisation can defend

Net zero sits beside carbon neutral and low-carbon claims. You build an inventory, set a target, and say what the organisation will do itself before it talks about offsets.

  • What the words actually mean
  • An inventory you can explain
  • Targets and the business case
  • Delivery and communication
  • Where offsets fall short
AllSystem
See the system, then pick a track

A short systems briefing before the specialist pages. Demand, supply and the limits of a model — then you continue in solar, wind, hydrogen, EVs or batteries.

  • Heat, transport and industry demand
  • Power and green gases
  • What a model can and cannot decide
  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Hydrogen
GridStorage
Connect, flex, store

How a site meets the grid: connection, peaks, backup and storage used as a plant asset. Chemistry, balancing and embedded BMS stay on the battery page.

Questions

  • Is this an Energy Institute certificate?

RIA teaches the practice in Chennai and records completion here. Energy Institute certificates and UK assessor routes are awarded by the Energy Institute Academy.

  • Where do solar, wind and fuel cells sit?

They stay on their own School of Energy pages. This pathway is the management, carbon and system view that sits around them.

  • Do I need a plant to join?

A workplace case helps on the professional block. Essentials and the systems briefing use RIA cases when you do not have a site yet.
