AI in Fashion Design

School of Design · AI + Craft Studio

From silhouette and textile craft to generative design, virtual prototypes and intelligent apparel workflows

RIA's AI in Fashion Design programme blends classical fashion foundations — silhouettes, textiles, draping logic, tech packs and collection planning — with generative AI, virtual prototyping and computer-vision quality assist.

You learn to keep designer authorship: AI accelerates mood boards, prints, colourways and sample communication, while fit, construction and brand ethics stay under human control. Capstones produce portfolio looks with process disclosure.

Studio-led pathway · Theory + Digital Fashion Lab + Generative Studio + Virtual Prototype Reviews + Capstone Collection

  • 1. Fashion Design Foundations & Digital Studio Fluency

Build traditional fashion literacy alongside digital workflows so AI augments craft — not replaces silhouette, drape, fit and market sense.

    • Fashion history, Indian and global silhouettes, textiles and fabric behaviour
    • Mood boards, colour stories, trend research and customer personas
    • Flat sketches, tech packs, size charts and measurement standards
    • Digital illustration / CAD for fashion (Illustrator / Clo / related workflows)
    • Brand identity, merchandising basics and collection planning
  • 2. Generative AI for Concept, Print & Surface Design

Use generative models for ideation while retaining designer authorship, IP awareness and brand consistency.

    • Prompt craft for apparel, prints, embroidery and texture concepts
    • Mood-to-sketch and sketch-to-variation pipelines
    • Print / surface pattern generation, repeat layouts and colourways
    • Style references, brand DNA constraints and negative prompts
    • Responsible AI: likeness, copyright, cultural appropriation and disclosure
  • 3. AI-Assisted Pattern, Fit & Virtual Prototyping

Connect AI and 3D fashion tools to reduce sample cycles and improve fit communication.

    • Digital pattern awareness and grading concepts
    • 3D garment simulation, virtual try-on and fit review workflows
    • AI assist for size recommendation and fit analytics (concept level)
    • Tech-pack automation: BOM notes, construction callouts, artwork placement
    • From virtual sample → physical sample gate reviews
  • 4. Computer Vision & Quality for Apparel Production

Apply vision and analytics ideas to fabric defects, embroidery QC and production consistency.

    • Fabric defect and colour-variation detection concepts
    • Print / embroidery alignment and quality scoring
    • Line balancing and productivity dashboards (intro)
    • Traceability and batch photography standards for AI datasets
    • Human-in-the-loop QC — when operators override model flags
  • 5. Trend Analytics, Demand Sensing & Collection Intelligence

Use data and AI to inform assortment, colour and drop planning without losing designer judgement.

    • Social / runway / e-commerce signal scanning (ethical sources)
    • Colour and silhouette trend clustering concepts
    • Demand sensing for SKU / size curves (practitioner framing)
    • Sustainable materials matching and waste-reduction ideas
    • Capsule collection planning with AI-assisted shortlists
  • 6. Fashion Commerce, Lookbooks & Generative Campaigns

Build go-to-market assets with AI while keeping brand voice, model ethics and retail readiness.

    • AI lookbook / flat-lay / lifestyle visual pipelines
    • Virtual model guidelines, consent and representation ethics

    • Brief: brand, customer, season, sustainability constraint
    • AI + handcrafted concept boards and print story
    • 2–4 looks with flats, tech notes and virtual prototype
    • Lookbook / campaign set with responsible AI disclosure
    • Jury presentation: process, tools, IP decisions and learnings
